Enlightened society is like a communal heart that pulsates with kindness in order to keep us all connected." - Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche

Applications due May 25th, 2018

Enlightened Society Assembly (ESA) is a nine-day New York City Regional retreat that emphasizes the intrinsic goodness of all beings and society. People from all over the world are invited to come and help manifest compassionate openness. Together we will participate in practices that rouse bodhichitta, or awakened mind, and activities that engage us fully in the world. In particular, living up to its name, this Assembly will focus on how we can create enlightened society on the spot, at home, in our city and nation, and wherever we go.

Students will deepen their commitment and intention to manifest basic goodness by taking the Enlightened Society Vow

About the Program

Participants in ESA receive and practice the Shambhala Sadhana composed by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. This powerful practice helps support our journey of trust and confidence in the inherent goodness in ourselves, others and society itself. ESA brings this sadhana practice together with mindfulness-awareness and our previous Shambhala practices. This Assembly will integrate study, practice, and community, and will expand our inquisitiveness and understanding of the Shambhala Buddhist teachings.

Whole Family Programming

Inspired by the growing movement to create more “whole family” oriented programming within Shambhala, Shambhala NYC aims to accommodate everyone on the path, including those with children. During this program, an Enlightened Children's Program is being offered for children of participants.

Study & Preparation

To prepare for the program in July, accepted students will participate in the Enlightened Society Assembly Preparation course on Shambhala Online. Additional informataion and a link to register for the course will be provided in your acceptance letter. The cost of the course is $35 General / $50 Patron. The prep course will also provide additional resources and materials. Copies of the primary study text, The Vow: Illuminating the Sun & Moon will be available for purchase at the center bookstore.
