Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention, in a particular way, on purpose, and without judgment, in the present moment. The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, developed by the pioneering MIT PhD John Kabat-Zinn, utilizes mindfulness to help develop a healthy mind and body awareness. This renowned framework gives students the tools to systematically work with stress, pain, illness, and the demands of daily life. 

MBSR instructor Paulette Graf teaches the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program at SMCNY. Paulette trained at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center for MBSR. With a BA in psychology and a background in Fine Arts she has pursued the field of meditation for more than 30 years. She studied contemplative curriculum at Naropa University, has practiced in the Zen, Vipashyana, and Shambhala Buddhist traditions and is a Shambhala meditation instructor. Her popular MBSR class is regularly featured in various news sources, including a showcase of Time Magazine's story on the 'Mindfulness Revolution.'

Paulette's 8-week MBSR course weaves together meditation, mindful movement and group discussion. Students will develop a fresh relationship with their minds and hearts that will allow them to experience space within usually impenetrable situations. Students learn to respond to triggers of stress and anxiety, rather than react to them. 

Each week the course introduces students to new methods, which accumulate to provide an emotional toolbox for relating to stress. Sample topics:

  • Communicating effectively   
  • Understanding the Stress-Reaction cycle 
  • Fight or Flight
  • Honoring Emotions 
  • Applying loving-kindness
  • Understanding assertion vs. aggression  
  • Seeing perceptions and changing perspectives

The transformative course includes eight 2-hour classes, and one Saturday practice day. Home practice is encouraged and support materials will be provided. The dates and times are as follows:

  • Wed June 28th: 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Space is limited. Early registration is encouraged.

At the conclusion of the course, students can request a certificate of completion.

About the Teacher

Paulette Graf has taught meditation for over 30 years and was featured in Time Magazine's recent article on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. She trained at the Center for Mindfulness founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
