Mindful Summer Camp Head Teacher

The Shambhala Meditation Center of New York seeks an energetic, patient, and caring Head Teacher for its week-long camp this July (and August)!

Mindful Summer Camp will engage 8 to 12 year-old children in a variety of activities and teachings. It will focus on exploring the senses and creativity through art making, trips to the park, storytelling, and play, alongside mindful activities designed to awaken the heart and imagination. Campers will learn how to develop aware, contented minds and explore methods to approach life’s challenges in ways that are emotionally intelligent, compassionate, and constructive.

Responsibilities:
-Assist with the planning and facilitating of camp activities and lessons
-Lead and assist with planned trip activities, including daily recess at Madison Square Park
-Work with the Camp Director and volunteers to ensure safe travel around NYC for camp field trips
-Be responsible for and care for campers by guiding them through the camp day
-Maintain a positive and inclusive environment for campers, volunteers, and staff
-Be a team player
-Share your meditation (yoga or other contemplative practice and experience) with campers

Requirements:
-A personal meditation practice, yoga practice, and/or contemplative arts practice to share with campers
-2+ years experience working with children in a school or camp setting
-Energetic, punctual, and positive team player
-Excellent communication skills
-Degree in education or child development not necessaries but preferable

Camp sessions are July 18th-22nd and August 15th-19th, from 9am to 3pm. The successful candidate may staff one or both sessions. The Head Teacher is expected to be on-site at the Shambhala Center from 8am to 4pm on camp days, and to participate in orientation sessions the week prior to each session.

The Head Teacher reports to Camp Director Alison Pepper.
