Faith: Beyond Doubt & Blind Acceptance
with Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel Fri April 9th: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PMSat April 10th: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PMSun April 11th: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Price: $175 Normal ($140 Members) ($20 Friday Only)Public Talk April 9 Friday, 7 - 9 pm | $20 paid pre-registration, $25 at the door April 10 Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm April 11 Sunday, 10 am - 1 pm $175 (includes Friday) + traditional teacher's gift $140 members The topic of faith addresses the basic human dilemma, how do we bear the mysterious and unpredictable nature of life? The Buddha himself grappled with this question; he wanted to know how to live a meaningful life in the midst of change and the unreliability of worldly things. The Buddha found that the human dilemma is not a solvable situation. It is a way of being that goes beyond limiting conclusions, that is open to possibility and that lends itself to a sense of adventure. In fact, the ability to live life as an adventure is a good definition of faith. This four-talk weekend investigates faith in the spirit of the Buddha. It addresses such questions as, what is the basis of faith? How can we cultivate it? How do we go beyond our personal and cultural tendencies of doubt and blind acceptance? What is the role of faith in our personal practice? How does faith support us in our everyday life? Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel has studied and practiced the Buddhadharma for 25 years under the guidance of her teacher and husband, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche. She has been intimately involved with Rinpoche’s work in bringing Buddhist wisdom to the West, in particular to the development of Mangala Shri Bhuti, an organization dedicated to the study and practice of the Longchen Nyingthig lineage. Elizabeth has an academic backround in both Anthropology and Buddhist Studies, but her learning is also grounded in practice. She has edited Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche’s two books, It’s Up to You and Light Comes Through and is presently working on a book of her own, tentatively titled, The Power of an Open Question and teaching the Buddhadharma in the United States and Europe. Online registration for this program is now closed. Please register by phone at 212-675-6544 or upon arrival.
