This meditation intensive is an introduction to the practice of mahamudra, the great symbol. While mahamudra is among the most profound teachings and practices of Vajrayana Buddhism, it is also extremely simple and direct. This program is appropriate for all tantrikas and sadhakas and, being introductory, it is also open to other students who have a serious intention to deepen their meditation practice.
The format for this program is modeled on the mahamudra as practiced in the Three Year Retreat at Gampo Abbey, which emphasizes direct, nonconceptual meditation experience. An overview talk will be given on Friday evening, then both days of the program will be practiced in the form of a group retreat in silence, including lunch and tea. Each day will conclude with a discussion circle.
Saturday will be devoted to the practice of mahamudra shamatha, using the text by the 17thc master Pema Karpo. On Sunday we will introduce the practice of vipashyana investigation, based upon Pointing Out the Dharmakaya by the 9th Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje.
For tantrikas who wish practice this text in depth, the program will serve as an introduction. For newer students, the program could serve to deepen their shamatha and vipashyana practice, and offer a “preview” of this tradition, should they wish to attend Sacred World Assembly in the future.
